March 19, 2025 Rambled around Peccioli & had a 9 course dinner!
Today, we headed down to Peccioli to show Grace around the town. See my previous post for more about the town. We took our time and enjoyed the Tuscan pace of life.
We popped our heads in Pieve di San Verano again and enjoyed the sound of the bells.
We haven't found kneelers with padding yet! I guess us Americans are soft!
After you click on the link, scroll down a tiny bit for a short video of the inside. It's better than the pictures I took.

Here are the bells:
Blending in with the locals after eating gelato.
A street in Peccioli. That little vehicle in the background, we think, can be rented like scooters in downtown Grand Rapids.
We found some public stairs to a viewpoint of the city. It was once a citadel of a Medieval fortress that was destroyed in World War II.
A church tower in the background.
The view.

When we returned to the villa, we were greeted by our host's dog, Maggie.
A couple of kids are missing their dog back home.
And finally, if you can stand another Tuscan meal, Paolo the 83 year old chef with the pet rooster, served us another indescribable gastrointestinal feast! This time, Grace was with us and I got a picture of the pet chicken!
We were his only guests.
1st course, sausage pate.
2nd course, cheese stuffed focaccia bread. So good! I might have to figure this one out when I get home.
.
3rd, a zucchini egg frittata?
4th, a cabbage like dish drizzled with balsamic glaze.
5th, zucchini, sundried tomatoes, etc. cooked to perfection.
6th, mashed potato, onions, and a light cream sauce.
7th, a thick slice of cheese with toasted almonds and capers.
8th, the best lasagna we have ever eaten!
9th, yes, 9th! A dessert of rice, cream/custard thing, drizzled with caramel and served with strawberries.
We were busting out of our waistbands at this point!
Paolo, our chef. He said cooking is a hobby and he learned a lot from his mother.
Here is Gallo Pio, his pet rooster.
Grace made friends with Pio.
We waddled home under a beautiful night sky and spent the evening digesting. Ahhhh, so nice!
March 5-6, 2025. We have safely arrived in Tuscany! It was a total of 24 hours of continuous traveling from door to door (Allendale to Montelopio). The views and weather are worth it! The temperatures are highs in the upper 60s during the day and lows in the 40s at night. The "Core 4" (that's shorthand for Rod, Katie, Paul, and Clare) playing Euchre in the Chicago airport during our 5 hour layover. Our third and final flight from Munich to Florence. Crossing the Alps from Munich to Florence. Our views! An abandoned villa up the road.
March 8, 2025 Today we explored the town of Peccioli, Italy which has its origins dating back to medieval times. The town's most notable historical feature is the Pieve di San Verano church built around the 11th-12th century. We had our first gelato of the trip while in Peccioli. Yum!
