May 23, 2025   A Trip to Glencoe With a Stop at Hagrid's Hut

Glencoe was the destination, but what fun is a road trip without stopping for a few sights along the way?

A bridge spotted from the car on the drive to Glencoe.

A busy street in Killin, our first stop.

Looking in the other direction of Killin.

Killin has had a mill on the River Dochart in some form since St. Fillin first built a horizontal mill in 750 A.D.

The current mill dates from 1840. It no longer runs but instead houses a shop of local crafter's goods for sale.

One legend tells of a miracle of St. Fillin involving a wolf. St. Fillin's ox was killed while it was pulling materials to the church he was building by a wolf and through St. Fillin's prayers the wolf pulled the cart.

The healing stones under glass inside the mill.

After the mill, we set out to explore the river. The water was low due to the long dry spell Scotland has had since we have been here.

There were several round holes, more than just these 3, on the rocks. Can a swirling eddy wear away rock in this manner?

Paul and Clare under the bridge that goes through town.

Let's leave Killin and drive on to the next stop.

Our goal was to get up into the highlands and have a look. This picture is from the car window.

Car window picture.

Looking barren with multiple erosion trenches.

Our next stop was Kingshouse Hotel that advertised stags in the area.

There are two stags in the center of the photo.

Foxglove were growing wild all through this area!

This is what we were in search of.

The way up to the hut location of Hagrid for the Harry Potter movies.

We found it!

2025!

After some photos, we headed back down the hill to drive into Glencoe to walk some trails and get something to eat.

We walked around this small inland lake.

As pretty as this rhododendron is, this particular variety has escaped landscape use and become invasive in the wild. You find it everywhere!

A friendly PSA.

This is Loch Leven, along which Glencoe sits. From here, you can sail out to the Atlantic Ocean eventually.

A marshy bit along Loch Leven, but today was dry and walkable.

Getting a bite to eat in Glencoe.

Pizza

Haddock

Garlic cheese bread and chips.

Chicken nuggets. Everywhere we have had some form of chicken nuggets, they have been quality cuts of meat. Never parts and pieces "glued" together like a McDonald's nugget.

On the way home, a popular pull off site was named the "Three Sisters". It's the three long hills you see here. I think people hike between them on paths. We were too tired to do that.

Back to the beginning of the post. Here is the same bridge we passed in the morning only this time at the end of our day.
